Free Tax Preparation For ALICE

Every year, United Way of Northern New Jersey teams up with the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and other community partners to provide free tax preparation for ALICE and poverty-level residents in our northern New Jersey region. Nearly 200 volunteers help United Way and its partners file an average 5,000 free tax returns at libraries, community centers, and places of worship across the region. This collaboration helps struggling households save $1.5 million in tax preparation costs.

Tax Preparation Training

Each fall, United Way recruits volunteers to become IRS-certified tax preparers. Volunteers are essential to expand this vital service and meet the growing need across the region. No experience is necessary! A free training program provides all the information needed to prepare both federal and state tax returns.

Free in-person and online training is offered to anyone interested in becoming a tax preparation volunteer. For more information about local and online training sessions, email Monica Conover or call 973.993.1160, x529.

Volunteers can also take online certification courses through the IRS. Click here to view the IRS's one-stop-shop for volunteer training.

Other Volunteers Needed

Not good with numbers? No problem! There are many other opportunities to get involved in tax season. We also need volunteers to:

  • Greet clients and assist with necessary paperwork

  • Provide translation services

  • Help residents find additional community services that may be available to them

  • Offer administrative support, such as scheduling and other office tasks
