COVID-19 Response
United Way Is Here To Help
The impact of COVID-19 on our region is our primary focus right now. At United Way of Northern New Jersey, we want to share with you what we’re doing for our community and how you can help. Be sure to check back often for updates.
United Way’s Response
ALICE Recovery Fund
When the pandemic hit, we worked quickly with our community partners and established the ALICE Recovery Fund. We helped hundreds of ALICE and poverty-level families and individuals pay rent, buy food, and cover other basics. Currently, we are not taking any additional applications as the high volume of requests has exceeded our funding. If additional funding becomes available, we will process requests in the order they were received. Donate today to help us meet the needs of vulnerable community members.
FREE online tax filing services
United Way and its partners have modified their tax preparation program so that families can continue to receive IRS-qualified tax preparation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Beginning February 1, 2022, area residents can visit uwnnj.org/freetaxprep to access a FREE and secure online tax preparation and filing service that ensures the health and safety of all during this tax filing season. Through an easy-to-use portal that includes secure document uploads, encrypted email communication, and video conferencing, low- to moderate-income individuals and families can save the average $270 it costs for a paid tax preparer. Free self-preparation software is also available. For questions about the online filing portal or if you are experiencing difficulties getting started, email UnitedWayTaxPrep@UnitedWayNNJ.org or call 973.993.1160, x5.
Virtual caregiving support
We are continuing to provide unpaid family caregivers with supports and resources to care for a loved one who is ill, frail, or living with a disability. We are doing this through virtual meetings and an assistive technology program that provides virtual needs assessment, technical support, and devices to caregivers.
Virtual volunteer opportunities
You can still make a difference by virtually volunteering. Opportunities range from making masks to calling isolated seniors to collecting food for local pantries.
