United Way Women United®

Women United (formerly United Way Women’s Leadership Council) raises the voice and vision of women leaders to fight for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in every community. This diverse, vibrant community of philanthropic women is bound together, united by our dedication to improving the communities we call home.

Our northern New Jersey group is proudly part of a powerful, global network of over 70,000 women from 165 communities and six countries, all devoted to creating a legacy of change that benefits everyone. This powerhouse network of change makers has already invested more than $1.5 billion in local solutions around the world, while inspiring and empowering women through philanthropy, advocacy, and volunteerism.

We are United for ALICE®

In northern New Jersey, Women United channels donations and efforts to help ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) and poverty-level women and their families become financially self-sufficient.

ALICE is your friend or neighbor, employed in a job essential to our shared success, such as a home health aide, preschool teacher, or cashier. Despite working hard, these individuals and families are unable to cover their basic needs such as housing, child care, food, health care, and transportation.

Through targeted scholarships, Women United is helping remove the barriers that keep many women and children from achieving their potential.

Child Care Scholarships
Studies show that children who receive quality early childhood education do better in school, earn more as adults, and commit fewer crimes. Sadly, the high cost of quality child care often puts these learning experiences out of reach. To help make crucial, quality care more accessible, Women United helps to fund scholarships for more than 1,000 children in our region.

Continuing Education Scholarships
United Way of Northern New Jersey partners with Centenary University, Raritan Valley Community College, Sussex County Community College, and Warren County Community College to provide ALICE Scholarships to qualifying students. These scholarships not only help ALICE families offset the prohibitive costs of pursuing advanced education, they also address the high demand for skilled workers in New Jersey industries. Thanks to generous matches from some of our partner institutions, both the impact of our fundraising efforts to support these ALICE Scholarships and the positive outcomes within our region are increased.

Professional Development Scholarships
The Child Development Associate (CDA) credential is a reliable and recognized demonstration of a child care professional's ability to meet the needs of young children. Recipients, often ALICE themselves, are able to provide a high standard of care for children in their communities, a crucial building block for ALICE children to succeed.  Women United supports scholarships for child care professionals to attain this advanced certification.
