FoodstockFor many, summer means time for vacations, fun in the sun, and enjoying family activities. But for some local families, summer can present overwhelming challenges.  When schools let out, so too ends subsidized school lunches five days a week and a structured environment to protect and care for children while parents are at work.

Typical childhood activities – running around, playing, and swimming – prove to be extremely challenging on an empty stomach.  United Way believes we can help more children have a fun summer powered by proper nutrition.

Every spring, United Way partners with the New Jersey Herald to host a county-wide food collection, called FoodStock, to raise awareness about hunger issues in our Sussex County communities.  Supplies collected through this community-wide food drive ensure local food pantries have a healthy reserve to meet the need during the summer months when demand increases.

So many ways to get involved!

  1. Donate food items

If everyone in Sussex County put a few items in the box, there would be plenty of food for all local families to eat throughout the summer months – and beyond.

Food collection takes place in May and June. The last day for 2018 donations is June 4. Drop-off locations are available throughout Sussex County. To find a drop-off location, please refer to the list below. For more information, email Sean Hyland or call 973.993.1160, x405.

  2. Organize a drive

United Way will help you organize a food drive at your office or in your neighborhood. Event posters will be provided to support your drive upon request.

Gather a few cardboard boxes and reserve an area in a public space for storing the collected non-perishables during the collection period. Local restaurants, supermarkets, and neighbors may have boxes to lend to your drive. Reach out to family, friends, and colleagues to collect non-perishable items.
  3. Make a donation

By donating to this food drive, you will be ensuring local families have access to proper nutrition in the summer months and beyond.

Donate via our secure online payment system:
