United Way of Northern New Jersey-The Coronavirus

get help » Coronavirus Response Plan

The impact of COVID-19 on our region is our primary focus right now. At United Way of Northern New Jersey, we want to share with you what we’re doing for our community, how you can help, and the status of our ongoing work. Be sure to check back often for updates.

Give to the ALICE Recovery Fund

As your local United Way, we are doing what we’ve always done: fighting for ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) households and those in poverty. These households were already struggling to afford the basics before COVID-19 hit. Now, more than ever, they need our help. Join us in the fight and give to our ALICE Recovery Fund.

ALICE Recovery Application

The ALICE Recovery Fund is now accepting requests for funding assistance. Click on the“Apply Today” button to submit your application.

Advocate on Social Media

Do your part to advocate for ALICE by following us on your social media of choice including FacebookTwitterInstagram, and LinkedIn and by using #ALICErecovery and #HelpALICE.

Don’t share a popular social media post advertising the number 866.211.9966, which is circulating about a United Way fund helping with bills, rent, and food — this is for assistance solely in Indianapolis.

Virtually Volunteer

Help make a difference in this time of crisis by virtually volunteering your time. Opportunities range from joining a virtual food drive to calling isolated seniors.

Important Information and Resources

Use the information below to access helpful tools and resources.

  • Community members seeking employment opportunities can visit these sites:
  • The N.J. Department of Health (https://www.nj.gov/health) has a call line 1.800.222.1222 with trained health professionals open to answer questions about COVID-19.
  • For general information, testing, and resources for basic needs, dial 211 or text your zip code to 898-211.
  • While United Way of Northern New Jersey’s free tax preparation sites are closed until further notice, we are offering tax filers two virtual options detailed below. Note: The U.S. Department of Treasury and the state of New Jersey have extended the 2019 filing deadline from April 15, 2020 to July 15, 2020.
    • Individuals can scan their tax documents and send them to us by email. We will prepare the return, review it by phone, mail a print copy, and electronically file it for households. For instructions on how to do this, call our tax line at 973.993.1160, x521 and leave a message indicating your interest in this service or email us at: unitedwaytaxprep@unitedwaynnj.org.

    • Visit: MyFreeTaxes.com to file simple returns for free. This safe and easy program offers 24/7 tax help within the software from a virtual assistant. (Please note, those who are self-employed will be charged $24.99 for a federal return and $18.50 for each state return. If you are unsure if you qualify as self-employed, check your tax documents for a 1099-Misc form, which will be considered a trigger for this fee.)

Rescheduled Events

United Way is always here for the community when times are tough, and we will continue to be. Although our offices are temporarily closed, we are working remotely and have the capability to meet via video and/or conference calls and continue to be fully accessible to each other and the community every day.

Unfortunately, some of our work has been temporarily affected (see below). Check back here often for updates.
